New Leaf Running Company was started after Coach Rick trained for his first marathon using some plan from somewhere. He finished in about 4 hours, but it was hard. His training runs were long, and in addition to the usual sore muscles, he was tired after training (this usually resulted in a Saturday afternoon nap after a long run). He couldn’t help but wonder if there was a better way.
Many hours of study and research later and Rick ran a second marathon, which resulted in a 47-minute improvement in time over his first marathon. And he didn’t need Saturday afternoon naps during training either. Not long after this run, Rick started helping other runners he knew train smarter and pursued a formal coaching certification so he could help even more.
“Over the years, the athletes who I see have the most fun during their training and progress the most in their running are the ones who come to the sport with a sense of curiosity. The most important thing I can do for my athletes is to allow them to explore their abilities, and help them incorporate running into their lives in a sustainable way. Meaning their happiness comes first, and we figure out how to fit the training around everything else.”
I have been an athlete and a coach from an early age. I started competing in sprint canoeing and coached athletes at my home paddling club. In 2013 I started taking my running hobby seriously and quickly jumped from 10k races to 100-mile ultra marathons. Along the way, I learned that while there is a lot of information out there about running and training plans you can get for free, but there is a more efficient and enjoyable way to train. Currently, I work with a wide range of athletes from brand new runners to seasoned veterans tackling races distances from 5km to 100 miles and everything in-between.
